How to Remove Negative Enegy in Your Home

The main reason to clear a space-your home, your car or your office-is to remove negative energies. Negative energies occur for a number of reasons. They include:

Metaphysical

Negative thoughts from current or previous owners or occupants

Disturbed emotional energy of current or previous owners or occupants

Dimensional beings

There's Help for Impossible Pill Packages

Flummoxed for years by pill packaging that causes flesh wounds and frustration, fed-up consumers are pressing companies for less painful ways to open their medicines.

The changes come as the industry that grew up around making packages and medication bottles ultra-child-resistant faces criticism for making them too impenetrable -- not just for the elderly, arthritis sufferers and the disabled, but for everyone.

"They are a pain in the (expletive)," said Charles Kendall, 45, inventor of the Popper, a handheld gizmo that slickly removes meds from pill packs with a pump of the hand.

"I've heard stories of people using a kitchen knife to gouge these medications open -- that's waiting for a trip to the ER," he said.

My 5-Step Method for Staying Healthy While Traveling

Have you ever gone on vacay and returned with a sore throat or the sniffles? Hello, sick day! Travel is notorious for leaving us run down. Here's what to do to fight back ...

Don't you just love hot air balloons? I think they're gorgeous. Speaking of traveling ...

I just got back from a whirlwind (and fun!) trip to Missoula, Montana, for a family wedding, and I did the following things to stay healthy. Try them!

1. Skip the hotel's continental breakfast. I think I can hear you whining in the distance, "but it's free!" But free food doesn't = healthy food. Here's proof: Hotels pack their free-breakfast buffet lines with less-than-choice ingredients: like "omelets" stuffed with imitation cheese, artery-clogging biscuits and gravy, and cottony waffles smothered in artificial maple syrup. Gals, you'd do better sticking with the granola bar and apple in your suitcase.

The Real Reason Why Women Have Sex (Or So Say Researchers)

Gals, if someone asked you what motivates you to have sex with your guy, what would your answer be? If I had to guess, I'd say that most women would respond by saying something like this: "Because it feels good, and it's a natural expression of love." Actually, researchers say that women have sex for this surprising, and frankly, kind of controversial reason...

According to researchers Cindy Meston and David Buss, the authors of the book "Why Women Have Sex," 84 percent of women have sex to "guarantee a quiet life or to persuade their men to do some housework."

Excuse me?

Am I the only one who's a little shocked by this? Do you have sex with your guy so he'll do the laundry?

The Pumpkin Pie Workout

Do you plan on eating pumpkin pie this month? Um, I do! I love the stuff, but it can get a little caloric. Enjoy your pie, yes, but here's the workout to do to burn it off ...

The brilliant gals over at FitSugar devised a way for us to have our cake, er, pie, and then burn it off. "If I wanted to offset the piece of pumpkin pie (316 calories) topped with two tablespoons of whipped cream (16 calories) with a little exercise," writes FitSugar's Susi May, " I would need to burn at least 332 calories." The plan? Just hop on a treadmill and follow these instructions:

*Calories burned calculations are based on a 130-pound woman

The Key to Happiness? Researchers Say Don't Do This

Gals, if you were asked what the key to happiness is, what would you say? Researchers are now suggesting that an everyday activity we ALL do is not making us any happier. Let's discuss ...

Oh, illusive happiness. We're all trying to find more of it, right? And now an age-old pastime we all like is getting the tsk-tsk. Day dreaming, say researchers, isn't good for our happiness any more than French fries are for our diets.

Why, you ask? According to Harvard researchers who tracked data from an iPhone app, TrackYourHappiness. Participants were randomly asked to report how happy they were and what they were doing.

The 5 Fitness Products Every Woman Should Own

What's in your fitness arsenal? I just stocked up on yoga apparel (yay!) for my new hot yoga workouts. But when it comes to fitness gear, I often wonder if I have everything I need. So I asked an expert to share her top five must-have fitness products. If you don't have these, it may be time to go shopping...

Sabrena Merrill, M.S., American Council on Exercise (ACE)-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor gave me this list of fitness must-haves:

1. iPod

"Any type of portable music player can do wonders for increasing motivation during cardio or weight-training sessions. Behavioral psychologists call it 'dissociation,' a method by which a person's attention is purposefully diverted away from unpleasant sensations. For the typical exerciser who struggles with exercise, listening to her favorite music can be a pleasant distraction, helping her stick to her workout routine."

Soda Fountains: Turns Out, They May Be Pretty Gross Places

First we heard that the ice in our drinks--oh, and let's not forget the lemon wedge too!--was loaded with germs. Now, health experts are warning that, statistically, you are likely to be drinking a pretty gross thing when you pour yourself a fizzy, fountain drink. And I won't beat around the bush. That thing is--I'll just say it--poo.

Can you say gross?!

I've never been a fan of soda--and we all know the health concerns associated with drinking too much of it, diet or not--so I will admit, I'm not crying about a new report linking soda fountains to fecal bacteria and other types of drug-resistant bacteria.

Sheep's Milk Has Benefits

Cows and goats are the most popular source of milk, but for health benefits, the stuff provided by sheep might just have the edge. And if you feel a bit, well, sheepish about ewes' juice, let the folks at Naturemade Sheep Milk argue the case.

Sheep's milk, the firm reports, tastes a lot like cow's milk, and some critics say it beats some cow's milk substitutes hands, or udders, down. It can be a "delightful accompaniment" for coffee, tea, corn flakes and the like.

Nutritionists say the vitamin and mineral content of sheep's milk is superior to that of other commercially available milk, and that a single pint contains the recommended daily allowance of calcium and vitamins B2 and B12. The the 45 percent mono or polyunsaturated fats it contains are beneficial to the circulatory system.

Sex Question: How Do I Get My Surgery To Be Covered By Insurance?

Dear Dr. H,

I was recently diagnosed (first self-diagnosed, then by a plastic surgeon) with tubular breasts, and I am looking into reconstructive surgery. I thought insurance would cover this, because it's a congenital deformity, but I've heard that it's almost impossible to get them to pay. Any suggestions on the best way to go about it? Also, I've heard that this can often affect the chances of breast feeding--is there any way to tell that in advance, or is it just a "wait and see" situation?

Read on for Dr. Hilda Hutcherson's response.

A. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes. When you have tubular breasts, your breasts tend to be smaller and more narrow (like a "tube"). Plastic surgeons may consider them a medical anomaly, but some other doctors--and your insurance company--may not agree. If you have a normal amount of glandular tissue (the tissue that produces milk)--and most women with tubular breasts do--you should be able to breastfeed. But plastic surgery for procedures like breast implants can sometimes impair breast feeding; my advice would be to speak to the plastic surgeon before you go under the knife about your desire to breastfeed one day.

Say Cheese

A slice of Stilton or a chunk of Brie is more than just a pleasant way to close out a sumptuous dinner. Scientists say you would also be doing your teeth just a world of good.

Dentists and nutritionists say research has found that cheese actually guards against tooth decay. The British Nutrition Foundation suggests that cheese "is the perfect enemy of sugars as they launch their corrosive attack on dental enamel."

The findings are the result of numerous studies, the latest of which involved a wide-ranging review of diet and health by Dr. Paula Moynihan of Britain's Newcastle University. Dr. Judy Buttriss, science director for the foundation, says the beneficial effects of cheese may be traced to a protein called casein.

Osteoporosis: A 'Silent' Health Threat

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. -- May is Osteoporosis Month. So it's time to bone up (no pun intended) on this "silent disease" -- named because it slowly robs bone mass and can go undetected until a fracture occurs. Get the scoop on osteoporosis symptoms (or lack of), osteoporosis treatment, and exercise to help osteoporosis.

"Many people think of osteoporosis as an older person's disease, and while it does primarily affect older women, it can strike at any age," said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold.

Osteoporosis has no symptoms in its early stages. Many people do not realize there is a problem until they have unexplained back pain or break a hip.

Healthy Eating Cam: I Caught a Woman Doing This!

I'm always curious about what people eat (maybe it's because I'm a health and fitness writer, or just really curious, or perhaps it's the fact that I'm a terminal people watcher--or all of the above). Recently, on the ferry boat, I saw a woman doing the strangest, and yet most fascinating, thing...

She was sitting there in a booth on the ferry boat munching on a snack. From a distance, this healthy and fit-looking gal appeared to be eating crackers or maybe even chips, but as I walked closer, I could see that she was eating--wait for this--plain spinach leaves!

Uh huh. She was chowing down on raw spinach. No dressing. No utensils. Nothing. At first I was a little surprised. I mean, how often do you see someone just sitting their eating greens? Then I thought, why not? If you don't need them slathered in dressing or hidden in your meal, why not eat them straight out of the bag?

How to Stay Positive in a Negative Work Situation

The work ethic is ingrained in our social consciousness. We like to contribute, take pride in our effort and get compensated financially and emotionally. Work is about integrating our personal rhythm with daily routines and other people. As we get busy, life gets rushed; our personal equilibrium gets harder to maintain and as a result we are giving others partial attention. We make mistakes and misunderstandings occur. That’s when negative "situations" begin to occur at the workplace.

Here’s a case study: Mark and Tom who work for a software company were assigned a prominent market research project to evaluate the competition for the company’s new software product. During the first week of the project Mark kept seeing Tom working on other assignments and finally lashed out at him for not pulling his weight. Fortunately, Tom calmly explained that he was tying up loose ends, clearing his desk, so that he could devote his complete attention to their project. Mark’s mind reading almost sabotaged the team spirit.

Sexual Abuse Victims Groups Criticise Pope's 'cynical' Meeting

Pope Benedict met victims of sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy in the last hours of his nine-day visit to Australia, underlining his earlier public apology for the pain they have suffered.

But his efforts have been criticized by victims support groups, who accused the church of "stage managing" the meeting, choosing people who would not speak out and labeling it a cynical public relations exercise.

The Pope held a private mass in a chapel at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney and then spoke privately with four representatives of abuse victims – two men and two women - for around an hour "as an expression of his ongoing pastoral concern for those who have been abused by members of the church," the Vatican said in a statement.

Health Expirement: If You Rub Garlic on Your Foot Can You Taste It In Your Mouth Later?

This one's really bizarre: I read recently that if you rub a garlic clove on the bottom of your foot, you can taste it in your mouth 15 minutes later. This supposedly demonstrates how sponge-like our skin (the largest organ in the body!) is, but does it work? I tried it ...

Did I look weird rubbing a clove of garlic on the back of my foot? Yes I did. But, in the name of research, I gave this experiment a whirl. I read about it on Simple Mom the other day, and was entirely fascinated. The concept was written about in Greg Horn's book Living Green. He says if you rub fresh garlic on the bottom of your foot, you will taste the garlic in your mouth within 15 minutes, demonstrating the fact that what you put on your skin circulates through your body--everywhere.

Acai Force Max

Acai berry has a considerable number of supplements with the recent addition of Acai Force Max to the long list. The following article is a brief explanation and review of this new supplement. To know more, read on

Acai Force Max is a newly introduced supplement of the acai berry. This supplement is the latest update to the long list and as usual has caused a stir in the market with some people claiming it to be a scam. Scam or not, what has amazed me is the increasing number of comments and reviews that appear every day on the web. The lack of proper medial study and proper documentation is probably the only reason that led to these web wars between haves and haves not of this supplement.

Do Mornings Stress You Out? 4 Tips for a Happier A.M.

Are you a morning person? I'm ... not so much. If I had it my way, I'd stay up late and snooze to the grand hour of 10 every morning. But no. Needs some tips to make your mornings a little less frazzled? I've got them for you ...

Dread the mornings? Here are some tips for making them better:

1. Don't be so work-focused in the a.m.: I know, we all gotta get to the office at some point (and isn't that why we got out of bed in the first place?). But let me explain. For many people, from the time they hear their alarm buzzing, they're already in work-mode--worrying about a project they haven't finished, a presentation to give, a co-worker, a boss, etc. I say, try to put work out of your mind until you're at work. You spend all day there anyway, why let the place creep into your precious private moments. Instead, carve out time for non-work-focused activities in the morning. For example: Go water your garden, take a walk, read, (even if you only have 15 minutes!). I love how my editor has coffee on her fire escape outside the window of her NYC apartment in the mornings--this is the kind of thing that empowers your day because you start by taking time to do something for you.

On Preventable Chronic Disease

In both my professional and my academic pursuits, I have begun to cultivate an interest in public health policies relating to (primary) prevention medicine and public health (long-time readers will no doubt recognize the turn in some of my posts in the last six months or so). I have noted several times that U.S. health care and research resources are woefully misallocated, with only tiny percentages of both care and research dollars going to preventive medicine and public health even while there is little dispute that such measures are far more likely to have a significant impact on population health than what we allocate the lion's share of resources to (acute care and development of new technologies and biologics).

Sex Question: Could The Bras I Wore During Puberty Be the Reason My Breasts Sag?

Q: I'm unhappy with my breasts. I'm only 25 years old and am a full A cup, but ever since I can remember, my breasts have drooped and are kind of triangular instead of round. Could this be a result of the kind of unsupportive bras I was wearing when they started to grow? Would wearing underwire bras have made them firmer and rounder? Is there any hope for them now? Keep reading for Dr. Hilda Hutcherson's response.

A. The size and shape of your breasts have nothing to do with the type of bra that you wear. There is no way to control their natural development. Some changes do occur when women start taking birth control pills; some women's breasts get bigger because of the estrogen in the Pill--and during pregnancy, breasts may become temporarily larger for the same reason. Breast implants, of course, are a surgical way to increase breast size, but there are health risks to consider, and the procedure is expensive. There's always the option of a good push-up bra. But I think it's important to remember that the size of your breasts does not define you or make you any less beautiful.

Most advice on parenting is for people who have children living at home. But for those of us whose kids have grown up and have families of their own, parenting still continues. The worries about the kids never stop, even though you may not see them everyday. And to make matters worse, when your kids are in their forties you still have the worries, but no control over what happens in their lives.

Parenting is a controversial issue. We are all influenced by our own cultural background. As a girl who was born in California, and has lived in New York and Massachusetts, here is my advice to parents with kids who are grown up and living with families of their own.

Causes and Cures For Stuttering

In this film publicity image released by The Weinstein Company, Colin Firth portrays King George VI in "The King's Speech." The film was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best picture, Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010. The Golden Globe awards will air live Jan. 16 on NBC. (AP Photo/The Weinstein Company, Laurie Sparham)

With the release of The King’s Speech, stuttering seems to be on everyone’s brains lately.  What causes it?  Is there any help?

It is a puzzling and ancient affliction. According to the Stuttering Foundation, more than three million Americans of all ages, stutter. Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations (lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds and syllables. There may also be unusual facial and body movements associated with the effort to speak. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering.

10 Things I Learned From Illness

When I was 19, my life seemed to have fallen apart: I was bedridden, unable to move my own limbs most of the time, had to give up university and work, diagnosed with a rare and terrifying illness, and told my life would "only get worse." I couldn't even imagine worse. Unable to get out of bed most days I spent what little time I wasn't sleeping thinking, praying, and reflecting. "This can't be the totality of my life," I often thought, desperately wanting to have a more "normal" existence, go to school, earn a living, and be a contributing human being. Now, most of you may already realize that the story gets better because I'm sitting here writing this blog and have authored six books as well.

Detecting Alzheimer's Disease Early

A new, noninvasive eye test could someday lead to the detection of Alzheimer's disease in its earliest stages. The test may allow patients to start treatment earlier, and it could also hasten the development of new Alzheimer's drugs.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of senile dementia, affects more than 18 million people worldwide. As life expectancy continues to increase, this number is expected to climb rapidly over the next few decades. The new eye test was developed after researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass., discovered that the protein responsible for causing Alzheimer's disease is present not only in the human brain, but also in the lens of the eye.

Hot Play Dates for the Single Parent

Does the thought of candlelight dinners and long walks under the moonlight give you more trepidation or heartache than pleasure? There are so many variables that come into play for solo parents, from coordinating baby sitters and carpools to dealing with resentful ex-spouses, that it’s easy to understand how the prospect of an evening out, particularly a romantic one, can become just another laborious chore.

One of the keys to turning your next dateinto a positive one is to take a lesson from your children and plan a play date. For single Moms and Dads, time spent doing something active, artsy, silly or downright messy is sure to lighten up the mood and alleviate a lot of the pressures associated with dating.

Dietary Fats: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Studies continue to be published indicating that high levels of cholesterol in the blood increase the risk of developing heart disease. That's been known for decades, but some recent data have changed dietary recommendations for lowering blood cholesterol. I thought it might be helpful to clarify the distinction between different blood and dietary fats and share recent findings and resultant dietary recommendations.

Cholesterol is a white, waxy, fat-like substance needed by the body to make various hormones and cell membranes, and to help the liver with fat digestion. The liver produces about 1,000 milligrams of cholesterol per day on its own. Most people take in another several hundred milligrams a day in their food.

How to Stop Difficult People from Zapping Your Energy and Happiness

What zaps your energy and happiness more powerfully and rapidly than anything else is your reaction to difficult people.

Notice I didn't say difficult people are responsible for zapping your energy and happiness. Only you are in control of you. You do have a choice in how you respond.

With that in mind, here is a simple, powerful and transformative - that is, intense - experience for you, in two steps.

For the first step, on computer, paper, or at least in your mind, make a list of the people you would define as difficult who you routinely correspond with or who impact your life.

This can include those in your professional and personal world, and those in the public eye, who rub you the wrong way, who make your skin crawl, or who -- if you didn’t believe in kindness and compassion or at least in avoiding jail -- you’d flat out enjoy punching in the nose.

Hot Dogs In Scrambled Eggs

Kitchens tell a lot about our history, our family and how deeply rooted some traditions are in the basic structure of who we are.

Even though my Grandma, Elizabeth DiFrancesca, has been gone since the summer of 1963, there is never a time when I’m around baking bread that I don’t think of her. I cover the loaves, like she did, with a clean tea towel, and though I don’t put them in the master bedroom to rise and with a finger to my lips to say, " Shh. The babies are sleeping." , to the little kids around, I still hear her voice and smile.

When my college aged son called me from Chicago to share a funny family quirk, I had another moment of visiting with dear ones, now gone. While working an internship just five minutes from my first cousin, Ken, he was a guest at their home for those four weeks. One morning, Ken’s wife Eileen offered to cook breakfast for Mike and he asked for scrambled eggs with hotdogs in them, prefacing the request with a an acknowledgement of the weirdness of the dish. With a surprised look, she said that Ken did the exact same thing and jokingly added, "What’s wrong with your family?" I laughed and shared the story as I had heard it.

Does Salt Content Matter for People with Normal Blood Pressure?

Q: My husband has high blood pressure, so I'm cooking low-salt these days. This means our meals taste bland and I'm tempted to reach for the salt shaker. After all, my blood pressure is normal. Do I really need to cut salt, too?

A: Yes. A study from the National Institutes of Health in the DASH Sodium Study found that salt drives up blood pressure in both healthy and hypertensive people. The researchers found that daily intakes of sodium below 2,400mg (estimates of our typical intake range from 3,200 to 6,000mg daily) helped prevent rises in blood pressure that occur with advancing age. The best results were noted with sodium intakes of 1,500mg or less. The issue of salt really is one of how sensitive you are to its effects.

Hot Potato Guidance

I’m pretty uncomfortable about it at this point, and I know too that I’m doing the right thing.

As you know, I function as a Chief Spiritual Officer for several businesses. It’s hard to explain what a CSO does. The basic job is to look at business scenarios of all kinds and listen for guidance at the same time. The implication of my commitment to these concerns is that whatever I get, I share.

Ay, there’s the rub

In one particular business, I got some guidance this week for the CEO, guidance that is out-of-the-ordinary uncomfortable. He’s making some choices in his new business that are both exhausting him, and causing difficulty within the business. He even asked me how to change his state of exhaustion. So I did what I always do, I tuned in-and voila!-guidance.

Breakfast at Your Desk: Have You Been Eating Your Blueberries? (Here's Why You Should!)

My dears, are you topping your cereal, your oatmeal, or your toast with fruit? If you do like to mix in fruit with breakfast, as I do, consider working in blueberries as often as possible. Here's the latest news on these super berries ...

It's the tail end of berry season, but you can still find cartons of blueberries at markets, so scoop them up when you can. Frozen berries are great, too! There's a long list of important reasons why, say health experts.

First, we know from past research from the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry that blueberries top the list of antioxidant-rich foods (plus, they boast all these other benefits!), and now researchers from the USDA report that these super berries may help reduce your risk of heart disease by fight atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries, the leading cause of two forms of cardiovascular disease--heart attacks and strokes.

Breakfast At Your Desk: Homemade Artisan Bread Every Morning? This Book Shows You How Easy It Is

When I first heard about a cookbook that promised an easy method for making homemade bread every morning, I was skeptical. As much as I love hot, fresh whole-grain bread, I didn't think there was anything easy about bread-baking. But, that was before I tried it ...

Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day, by Jeff Hertzberg, M.D., and Zoe Francois, is a cookbook that just might change your life. Their no-knead method totally surprised me! You just dump the ingredients into a big bowl/container, and let it sit for two hours. Then, you just shape and bake the bread. Refrigerate the rest and simply pull off a bit of dough when you want to make bread in the next few weeks.

How To Be Happy

What is Happiness? The dictionary gives us a definition with synonyms, almost too many of them but in a nutshell all the words represent a good feeling and feeling good is the natural quest in life. But how to arrive there or better still how to be in that state of feeling good, more or less continuously?

We associate happiness with when … then. When I have what I want then I will be happy. What I want may be drawn from the well of careers, finances, relationships or more specifically that particular job, or income or mate … and yet those who have attained what they desire find that the resulting happiness is very short lived or eludes them completely. And then the cycle begins again. Furthermore, to quote Srikumar Rao, whatever it is that we can get we can also "un-get" making the source of our happiness very precarious.

Mental Health Minute: The Link Between Your Hands & Your Happiness

Your hands. Take a good look at them. Oddly, experts say there's something about them that may predict your happiness and risk for depression...

Blisstree recently reported on a subject that fascinated me. Our hands, they say--citing a recent post on EcoSalon by Amy DuFault--may be an indicator of our happiness, particularly whether we're likely to be depressed or not.

"Our ancestors, women in particular, struggled with depression much less than we do today, because they were way too busy working with their hands on meaningful (and often essential) tasks typically known as women's work, like knitting, sewing, cooking, and gardening," writes Christine Egan. "And maybe the old-timey broads were onto something. They simply lacked the opportunity to sack out in front mindless reality TV, eat a bunch of junk food, waste time on the Web, or wallow in self-pity. Instead, they had things to do, fix, make, cook (and people to take care of) all the time--in order to just survive. When they finished all that, they got to sleep for a few hours. And then get up and do it all over again. In short, there was simply no time for women to become depressed..."

How to Be Happier: 9 Action Steps

"What can we all do as individuals or communities to make ourselves happier?" What an excellent question!

What can a single individual do to create more happiness for themselves and their communities?

Fight the Status Quo

If you are an American, fight to overcome the cultural norm which says, "He who dies with the most toys wins." Stop chasing the dollar. Stop believing that having more "things" will make you happier. Don't buy a new PS3 or Wii. Save your money to pay off old bills that are stressing you. Work fewer hours and spend more time with your family. Take your kids to the park instead of the mall. Invite your neighbors. Do you even know their names?

Breakfast at Your Desk: Irish Soda Bread With Dried Fruit

My mom used to make Irish soda bread every year around St. Patrick's Day, and I loved it! It's now a tradition in my house, too. It's so good and with all the hearty dried fruit in this recipe, it would make a sweet little March breakfast ...

Do you read the blog RecipeGirl? Lots of good ideas here, even if you don't cook (you can drool!). Here's what the head Recipe Girl, herself, had to say about this fabulous Irish soda bread that's making me so hungry right now: "My husband's family is 100% Irish so I went searching for the perfect Irish Soda Bread recipe to try this year. He doesn't really come from a family of cooks, so this proved to be a daunting task. My mother-in-law makes it with a base of Bisquick… I can't imagine baking anything with Bisquick, so that recipe didn't really interest me. Second cousins came directly from Ireland so I figured I had it made with that part of the family. But sadly, no one had a recipe … not even one. Isn't that just crazy? An Irish family without an authentic Irish Soda Bread family recipe! Bummer. Lesson learned here: write down your family recipes and make sure your kids get their hands on them. They're treasures to be remembered and passed along."

Do You Give Smokers the Evil Eye?

I'm just going to put it out there: Lately I do not have a lot of love for smokers. Sure, it's your body, your decision. But when clouds of second-hand smoke from your Marlboro Lights are wafting into my face in a public place (where, news flash: it's illegal to smoke!), we're going to have words. Tell me, do you have lots of love or hard feelings for smokers?

This is terrible, but I absolutely give smokers stink eye (doesn't "stink eye" just encapsulate that look perfectly?) when I'm forced to breathe their second-hand smoke in a public place. Sorry, but when they're smoking on the sidewalk and exhaling their nasties in a big cloud in my direction, it bugs me.

Is It Time to Declare a Truce With Your Body?

Have you been battling with your bod for the better part of your life? Whether it's your weight, your tummy, your arms, your ears--whatever you're uncomfortable with--don't you love the idea of waving the white flag of surrender and just saying enough?!

It's the subject of a newish book, Lessons from the Fat-o-sphere: Quit Dieting and Declare a Truce with Your Body, which the gals over at Never Say Diet are buzzing about, namely why negative talk about your own body (and others) is so bad for you.

Want to call a truce with your bod, or just a certain body part? I do. I'd like to end the battle with my belly. Here I go:

How to be Happy? Advaita or Non-Duality

Dear Friends

How to be Happy? Advaita or Non-Duality

When we have met friends on various world tours of The Great Spiritual Masters, the eternal question "How to be happy?" has often come up. The Ashtavakra Gita has been universally cited as a step in the right direction because it presents the traditional teachings of Advaita (Non-Dualism) Vedanta with a clarity and power very rarely matched.

The Ashtavakra Gita, or the Ashtavakra Samhita (Ashtavakra's Collection) as it is sometimes called, is a very ancient Sanskrit text. There is little doubt amongst scholars in the East and West that it dates back to the days of the classic Vedanta period. The Sanskrit style and the doctrine expressed warrant this assessment. The text sees duality as the root of evil, asserts the importance of belief in sharing one's world view as unlimited or unbounded, and confidently proclaims the radical unity of the Supra Universal Consciousness and Its Creative Connections including humankind.

Breakfast at Your Desk: Major Cereal Recall in the Works (Toss These Boxes!)

Not exactly the most appetizing news to share at breakfast, but if you have a box of any of these popular cereals in your house or office, time to toss them. They might make you sick ...

Kellogg Co. is voluntarily recalling about 28 million boxes of Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks cereals. The problem? A "waxy" smell and flavor coming from the package liners could make people ill, the company said.

According to Kellogg spokeswoman J. Adaire Putnam, 20 people have complained about the smell; 5 reported nausea and vomiting. Kellogg is trying to figure out what exact substance on the cereal liners is causing the problem (so weird that if their product has a funky smell and flavor that they don't know what it is, huh?).

How to be healthy, Part 1 of 5

Living healthy should be the goal of every person. Without health we have nothing and everything else in life can be forgotten. I have come to this conclusion after studying healthy people, rather than studying ill people or diseases themselves.

American psychologist Abraham Maslow was of this same belief and created his hierachy of needs after studying exemplary people. He wrote, "the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology and a cripple philosophy."

Maslow's hierachy of needs has health and the physiological needs of a person as the base or foundation of all needs, taking more importance than a person's self esteem needs and even spiritual development. I personlly agree with Maslow and thus the basis of all of my work with my clients will initially focus on the physiological needs or the needs of the body - good nutrition, water or hydration, and balance or homeostasis of the nervous system. Without these then energy will dwindle and concentrated effort into other endeavours will not be as effective.

Breakfast At Your Desk: Omega-3-Rich Granola

Maybe you're a big fan of granola, like me. But have you ever tried making it yourself? It's surprisingly easy (and budget friendly!). Here's a recipe that's both tasty and high in good-for-you Omega 3s.

I've confessed here before that I'm not so into flax seeds (they get stuck in your teeth!), but I'm warming up. I do love that they're rich in omega fatty acids--you know, the good-for-you fats credited for reducing your risk for heart disease, even fighting depression. With that in mind, this granola recipe might appeal to you, as it does me (as it calls for flaxseed meal!):

How to be healthy, Part 2 of 5

In my last post I discussed how Abraham Maslow developed a system of human needs that we must all meet, and how I have adapted this hierachial system to influence a person's health.

The base or foundation level of the hierachy is the physiological needs. These must be begun to be worked on, and ideally mastered before moving on to the next stage, or level.

This next level is the Safety needs, or otherwise said, all humans need to feel safe. If we do not feel safe there will always be an innate feeling of being un-safe which can be very stressful to the human being and their nervous system. So what does "safety" consist of for human needs?

Breakfast at Your Desk: Indian-Spiced Oatmeal, With Coconut Milk

Is your oatmeal getting a little bland these days? Consider spicing it up with steel cut oats, a bunch of Indian-inspired spices and a drizzle of coconut milk! Now we're talking, right? Here's more on this oatmeal makeover ...

Beth over at Budget Bytes is raving about her Indian Spiced Oats With Coconut creation. And, I have to say, this sounds amazing. I read her post and promptly decided that spiced steel-cut oats were going to be on the menu at my house--stat.

Here's what she had to say about her heavenly (and affordable!) bowl of oatmeal:

"This little Indian pilaf-inspired oat mixture turned out FANTASTIC," she writes. "The spices, sweet raisins, crunchy almonds and super creamy coconut milk balance each other perfectly. This breakfast will make you feel like the Maharaja while only costing you $0.70!"

Breakfast At Your Desk: The Easiest, Tastiest & Most Budget-Friendly Breakfast Idea Ever!

I'm still crazy about my favorite new no-bake breakfast cookies, which I told you about last week, but I have found a new breakfast love that I'm absolutely giddy about (no joke). Wait until you see the genius breakfast idea I have for you busy, time-pressed gals...

You guys know that I love pancakes (Exhibit A: Body by Glamour's amazing fiber-rich banana pancakes). But I hardly ever have time to make them on hectic mornings at my house. Then, my friend Annette told me about her solution: She bakes big batches of healthy pancakes, freezes them, then pops them into the toaster oven to reheat whenever she wants one. Brilliant, right?

How to be healthy, Part 3 of 5

In part 1, and part 2 of this 5 part series of blog's I discussed the need for a person to create their own health holistically through firstly the physiological needs of good food/nutrition, water, breathing, and balancing their stressors, and then secondly through creating safety and security in their employment, finances, and body, through healthy methods outlined in part 1.

All of these are aspects of health and although prioritised into levels or hierachies, it is important to note that all are important if you truly want to be healthy.

The next level in the hierachy are the social needs, or the needs of love and belonging.

Breakfast at Your Desk: These Easy Pancakes Will Change Your Life (Promise)

Have you ever seen a photo with a recipe that made you so hungry you whipped up the recipe on the spot? I did that yesterday after seeing an amazing recipe for pancakes ...

Health magazine recently released their new book The CarbLover's Diet (sounds like a terrific book), and USA Today featured a recipe for oatmeal-blueberry pancakes with a maple-Greek yogurt topping--yum!

I loved the idea of making pancakes with four simple ingredients: oats, eggs, cottage cheese, and blueberries (oh, the vanilla, too). So, I whipped up a batch and was so incredibly smitten with the recipe (it makes a great breakfast or a hearty snack), I wanted to share it with you too:

How to Talk to Your Kids About Love and Sex

We teach children to read and we expect them to read. We teach them about numbers and we expect them to be able to do mathematical equations. So then how can we not teach our kids about human sexuality and still expect them to make sensible love and relationship decisions? Some societies say that sex education will cause more pregnancy, but drivers' education certainly doesn't cause more accidents, does it?

In my opinion, one of the most wonderful wishes you can have for your children is that they have healthy happy love lives. The best way for them to achieve that is to be raised with open and honest communication about love and sex.

How to be healthy, Part 4 of 5

When it comes to human needs, and fulfilling these needs in order to be healthy, the next stage after the social needs of a person are the esteem needs - self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others.

All of these esteem needs, in my eyes, come down to one thing and one thing only, and that is whether a person loves themselves or not. The word "esteem" comes from the similar word "estimate", which would show that "self-esteem" is a person's own estimate of themselves, or how much they feel that they are worth.

Obviously to feel that you are worth anything requires you to love yourself. When a person truly loves themself they can sure to be free of all mental ills, particularly the prevalence of depression. And once a person is at this stage of developing their human needs, it almost makes the lower or more primal human needs less important.

Breakfast At Your Desk: Whole-Wheat Cinnamon Rolls

Is there a breakfast more festive and comforting than cinnamon rolls? I think not. But who wants to load up on sugar and butter in the a.m. hours? Not me, thanks. So, I devised a healthier cinnamon roll that I'll be making during this holiday month ...

I told you guys about my love for cinnamon rolls in this post, where I referred you to a really good--lighter--cinnamon roll recipe from Cooking Light. But, I wanted to tell you how I'm making these little breakfast treats lately--namely, with whole wheat flour (extra nutrients!) and less sugar.

How to be healthy, Part 5 of 5

To conclude this 5 part article on 'How to be healthy', we are going to discuss the final level of Abraham Maslow's Hierachy of Human Needs.

In order to be healthy we must visit each of these needs in turn, beginning with the primal needs, or physiological needs, working our way through social interaction, the need for love or belonging, self-esteem, and now finally once those lower level needs are met we move onto self-actualisation, otherwise known as the aesthetic needs.

These aesthetic needs are realised through reaching one's own maximum potential through morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice and acceptance of facts. There is a very spiritual view to all of these points, however Maslow himself towards the end of his life acknowledged that beyond self-actualisation is actually self-transcendence - the level associated with much more mysticism and insight than any of the other levels.

Bye Bye Burgers! This City Has Declared Mondays Meat-Free--Could You Get on Board?

One U.S. city has made a bold move by declaring "Meatless Mondays" in the name of health and the environment. City residents are encouraged not to eat meat on this day of the week and restaurants are encouraged to offer more vegetarian fare. What do you think?

(Sorry, but that photo is making me really hungry! For the sake of this post, let's pretend it's a Boca.)

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is asking residents not to eat meat on Mondays. That's right, better not order a steak or the roast chicken while eating al fresco on a Monday night this spring in San Fran, or risk getting a dirty look or two.

How To Be Depressed

"Depression was, indeed, the hand of a friend trying to press me down to the ground on which it was safe to stand--the ground of my own truth, my own nature with its complex mix of limits and gifts, liabilities and assets, darkness and light."

- Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak

I don't think I've ever been clinically depressed. Well, maybe I have, but it certainly didn't feel clinical. It felt morbid, cosmic, and unavoidably essential. When I was thirteen, my parents split for the umpteenth and final time and a few months later, my dad brought it to my attention that I'd been wearing the same hockey jersey for weeks and that I needed to start doing the dishes again.

Celeb Health: What Jennifer Aniston Said About Motherhood (No, She's NOT Pregnant)

Isn't it amazing how many celeb magazines seem to be spotting baby bumps on Jennifer Aniston? She's tiny, but I tell you, if I were her, I'd want to start wearing Spanx 24-7 for fear that some paparazzo might snap my belly in an unflattering light. Imagine how you'd feel if people kept pointing out your pooch and whispering "baby"! So, she's not pregnant, but she is speaking out about it...

In her own words, to People magazine, here's what Jennifer, 39, had to say about motherhood: ''I feel like that's in my future and I'm on the verge of it in some way--or it's something I long for," she explains.
